Starlink is a satellite-based internet service developed by SpaceX, designed to provide high-speed broadband access to users around the world. Instead of relying on traditional infrastructure, like underground cables or cellular towers, Starlink uses a network of low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites that communicate directly with a user-installed dish, often called the "Starlink Kit".
This approach enables it to provide internet connectivity to both urban and remote areas, where conventional providers may face limitations or unavailability. The approach also allows it to offer lower latency and faster speeds compared to older satellite internet systems. The service is particularly useful in regions with poor or inconsistent internet infrastructure, as it requires only a clear view of the sky and minimal setup.
If you’re looking to learn how to install the Starlink internet service in Nigeria, it likely means you’ve already ordered the hardware (kit) from the official store or an authorised partner. But, if you haven’t bought a Starlink kit, you must, as this is the equipment you’ll be installing. Starlink operates differently from local ISPs, which depend on network towers to deliver service.
If you’re unsure which type of Starlink kit to choose, we’ve written a comprehensive guide to help you select the option that best suits your needs. The article also explains the different types, hardware prices, and monthly subscription plans of Starlink internet services currently available in Nigeria. You can also check out how fast Starlink internet service is in Nigeria.
I will guide you through the process of installing your Starlink, from kit setup to plan subscription, in Nigeria. You can install it yourself without hiring a technician, and I will show you beyond the self-aligning dish, which requires an unobstructed, high location (roof/pole) and connects via cable to a WiFi router. I will also walk you through how to activate, subscribe, and optimise the device for better performance.
How to Order Starlink in Nigeria
I'd love to start from the beginning so that you can understand all the processes from A to Z. If you already have your Starlink kit, you can skip this section and proceed to the installation, activation, subscription, or optimisation sections.
Buying Starlink in Nigeria is as simple as going to the company's official website and ordering one. But there are some things you need to understand before you make a purchase. First, you need to understand the type of Starlink that'll be best for your needs. Secondly, you need to know the type of payment method that works in Nigeria for Starlink purchases.
Once you put these into consideration, then you can go ahead and order your Starlink kit. Now, let's discuss the types: there are three main service types, Residential, Roam, and Business, in Nigeria. There are more, but they are not common. These three main service types are usually paired with either standard (Gen 2/3) or high-performance hardware.

However, the price of these services varies based on the kit you choose to pair them with. For instance, the Residence Starlink costs ₦590,000 for hardware and ₦57,000 for a monthly subscription. The portable Mini and Business plans are also available for higher portability or speed. I explained the types of Starlink and their differences in another article; read it to learn more.
After you learn the differences and choose the right Starlink, you can place your order. To place an order, go to https://starlink.com/ng and select either "personal" if you're buying Starlink for personal use or "business" if you're ordering for business purposes. Choosing either option will bring out the types of Starlink that best suit the needs.
However, it's important to note that the primary payment method for purchasing Starlink in Nigeria is using a virtual dollar (USD) card. You can get a virtual USD card from fintech platforms like ChipperCash, Raenest, Gigbanc, ALAT, and more. Some Nigerian banks' Mastercard/Visa cards that have enabled online international transactions can also work.
Once you make payment for your Starlink on the official website and the kit is shipped, delivery times may vary depending on your location. However, you will receive a tracking link that allows you to monitor your order’s shipping progress. According to information on Starlink’s support page, delivery to Nigeria typically takes between 4 and 8 days from the date of shipment.
However, you can save yourself from Starlink payment stress and shipment delay simply by buying your Starlink from an authorised local merchant. But local merchants' prices are much higher than those on the official site.
How to Install Starlink in Nigeria
The Starlink installation is simple and straightforward with the Starlink app. Once you've received your Starlink hardware, the next thing you need to do is download the Starlink app on either the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store, depending on the phone you are using. The app will help you with obstruction checks, alignment, and network setup.
Downloading and installing the Starlink app is the first step. Once the app is successfully installed, you'll use the "Check for Obstructions" tool in the app to find the best installation location, which will enable your Starlink to deliver the best service. While using the tool, it's important to install your Starlink's dish where there's a clear sky view at 100–110 degrees.
It's also important to avoid obstructions like tall buildings and trees. In fact, mountains, hills, rooftops with higher sections, water tanks, billboards, utility poles, or even nearby elevated terrain can also interfere if they sit directly in the line of sight. Even smaller objects like chimneys, antennas, or solar panels can cause intermittent signal drops if they sit in the dish’s field of view.
So, for the best performance, you must install your Starlink's dish in the highest practical location—such as a rooftop or open yard—where nothing blocks its view of the sky. Once you've got a clear view of the sky, assemble and mount the dish by attaching it to its stand.
Next, connect the dish to your Starlink router and plug the router into power. The dish will auto-orient to locate satellites within 5 to 10 minutes. If your Starlink is Gen 3, you may need to manually adjust the settings through the app.
Starlink Standard Actuated and Starlink Performance (Gen 1) will automatically level themselves to search for satellites overhead. Do NOT attempt to manually adjust your Starlink. For Starlink Standard and Starlink Mini, use the alignment tool to position Starlink to connect to satellites overhead.

In addition to that, the company also made it clear that "your Starlink may need to download the latest software after initial setup for optimal performance". However, this will only happen automatically during the night.
How to Activate Starlink in Nigeria
Once you've installed your Starlink devices properly, the next thing to do is to activate them, and the activation can only be carried out using the Starlink app. Follow the steps below to activate your Starlink:
- Open the "Starlink App" on your device.
- Click on "Start Setup" in the app.

- Input your "Starlink Kit ID". The Kit ID is located on the dish and on the router.
- Choose your preferred service plan (subscription plan). The service plans include Residential, Roam, and Business.
- Proceed to payment. You can use a virtual USD card to complete the payment as I have explained earlier.
- To confirm your setup, Starlink always comes with an hour of free internet usage.
