Flutterwave POS: How to Buy and Set Up, Charges, Fees, and App

Here's a guide to Flutterwave POS, its fees and charges, and how to download and use the mobile app.
Flutterwave POS

Like many reputable fintech companies in Nigeria, Flutterwave also offers point-of-sale (POS) terminals to merchants and agents. The Flutterwave PoS terminals can be used to carry out various types of financial transactions, including cash transfer, cash withdrawal using an ATM card, data and airtime subscription, and bill payments.

In addition to that, Flutterwave POS is a good payment terminal for those that want to start a cash withdrawal business because the machine accepts all ATM cards in Nigeria, including Interswitch, MasterCard, Visa, and Verve. Flutterwave built and integrated the POS system on its digital payment ecosystem to simplify payment processing for businesses.

This is to show that no matter the scale of your transactions, Flutterwave POS is always ready to receive payments for businesses' goods and services.

The Flutterwave POS also possesses an app that works on both Android and iOS devices. The POS allows merchants/agents to turn their smartphones or tablets (or iPads) into a payment terminal, allowing them to accept payments, manage inventory, and run an online store effectively.

Features of Flutterwave POS

  • Fast Transfers: Transfer money directly from a customer’s bank account to your merchant account, locally or internationally, in a few minutes, any time of the day.
  • Card Issuing: Flutterwave allows you to create and manage virtual cards inside the platform. The system will generate you a 16-digit number together with a CVV code that you can use to purchase goods and pay for services remotely. In addition to that, you can also set spending limits and site-specific limits and restrictions. Notably, Flutterwave stores the cards with their API.
  • Bill Payments: You can pay various bills (airtime, data, electricity, cable TV, etc.) directly from your Flutterwave POS and wallet. This feature offers convenience to both merchants and customers, and it's one of the reasons some merchants prefer to use the POS because other POS machines, like Moniepoint, do not offer data purchase on their system.
  • Invoicing: Creating professional-looking invoices is crucial in businesses. Invoice by Flutterwave helps you create and manage invoices with your clients. It helps you to keep track of all the payments made and makes them easily and readily available and accessible to you at all times.
  • Card Payment Acceptance: Flutterwave POS terminals accept payments from various cards and other platforms such as mobile money and USSD via the Flutterwave POS app.
  • Payment Links: Flutterwave payment links were designed for owners of businesses who are in need of a platform to accept payments from their customers. Essentially, after setting up, the next step needed for you is to share your payment link with customers, with which they can make payments.
  • Inventory Management: Flutterwave POS inventory management helps businesses keep track of their products in real time. This makes it seamless to monitor stock levels, record sales, and avoid running out of fast-moving items. Every time a sale is made through the POS terminal, the system automatically updates the inventory, reducing manual record-keeping and errors.

In addition to that, business owners can view stock quantities, track product performance, and identify low-stock items that need restocking. This makes day-to-day operations smoother, improves accuracy, and gives merchants better control over their sales and inventory from a single, centralised system.
  • Security and Customer Support: Flutterwave's built-in fraud detection and secure transaction protocols are available to ensure merchants and customers are safe. In addition to that, there are dedicated, responsive, hands-on desk customer teams that are available to address any issues.

How to buy Flutterwave POS terminal

Flutterwave POS

First, I want you to understand that you cannot buy Flutterwave POS because the company is only offering the terminals on a cautionary agreement. Merchants are targets. Follow these steps to register a Flutterwave account, set it up, and request a POS machine.

Register Flutterwave agent/merchant account

  • You need to download the Flutterwave POS on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, depending on the smartphone you're using.
  • Once the POS app is downloaded and installed on your device, open it and click "Sign Up" to create an account.
  • Enter your email address and create a unique password for the account.
  • Enter your personal information (including legal names and a valid phone number) and your business information.
  • Enter your "Referral Code", but it's optional.
  • Check the ‘I agree’ box and click the "Register" button to complete your account creation.

Set Up and KYC verification

After creating a POS account, you'll need to fully upgrade the account by completing "Know Your Customer (KYC)" verification to access the POS features. Hence, you will be needing the following documents to enable the upgrading of your account:

  1. National means of identification such as NIN, Voter's Card, Driver's License, or International/ECOWAS passport.
  2. Bank Verification Number (BVN)
  3. CAC's business registration certificate (optional)
  4. Utility bills such as electricity bills or waste management bills.

Once you possess all these documents and you're 18 years old or above, then begin to submit and upload the documents as required in the Flutterwave POS app. The Flutterwave team will review all the documents and information you submitted to see if they're valid and tally before final approval.

Once your documents are approved, your account will be verified, and an aggregator, near you, will be assigned to your account.

Requesting for POS

Once your Flutterwave account is verified and an aggregator has been assigned to you, you can then use your aggregator code to apply for a POS machine inside the POS app. A Flutterwave aggregator code, often referred to as a Subaccount ID or API configuration parameter, is used within Flutterwave's Split Payments API to allow a single entity to manage payments for multiple vendors or sub-merchants.

Your aggregator will review your application and forward it to Flutterwave. Once your application is approved, the aggregator will link a POS terminal to your account and give you all the necessary training you need to set up and manage the terminal effectively. Flutterwave aggregators (or licensed payment aggregators/service providers) are the middle layer connecting merchants to the company.

Flutterwave always assigns the nearest aggregators to merchants. Note, if you cannot find your aggregator code in your account, you'll have to contact the aggregator in order to get the code. Remember that the aggregator has been assigned to your account, and means of communication will also be available in your dashboard.

Types of Flutterwave POS

There are two types of Flutterwave POS machines:

  1. Flutterwave Smart POS terminal (Android-based POS)
  2. Flutterwave Traditional POS terminal (Keypad/Card POS).
Flutterwave POS terminals

1. Smart POS terminal

Flutterwave SmartPOS has a large touchscreen and operates like a mini smartphone. The device typically supports advanced features such as inventory management, detailed reporting, app integration, QR payments, and a smoother user interface. It’s ideal for supermarkets, restaurants, pharmacies, and businesses that need more than just basic payment processing.

2. Traditional POS terminal

This Flutterwave POS terminal has a smaller screen with physical buttons and is mainly used for processing card payments, transfers, withdrawals, and basic transactions. It’s simpler, more straightforward, and often preferred by agents or small retail shops that primarily handle cash withdrawals and card payments without needing advanced business tools.

Flutterwave POS Charges and Fees

Flutterwave applies clear and structured fees across deposits, withdrawals, and transfers. Every deposit attracts a charge of 0.6% plus ₦20, regardless of the amount. Withdrawals are charged at a proportional rate of ₦6 for every ₦1,000 withdrawn.

This means that ₦1,000 costs ₦6, ₦5,000 costs ₦30, and ₦10,000 costs ₦60, with the same rate continuing for amounts above ₦20,000. In addition to that, every transfer on the Flutterwave platform attracts a flat fee of ₦20 per transaction.

Flutterwave charges and fees

Importantly, Flutterwave POS does not charge stamp duty, unlike the standard ₦50 stamp duty typically imposed by the Federal Government on withdrawals or transfers of ₦10,000 and above. All applicable transaction fees are subject to 7.5% Value Added Tax (VAT).

Comparison with other POS terminals

For collections in Nigeria, local transactions across all supported payment methods are charged at 2% per transaction, comprising a 1.4% transaction fee and a 0.6% platform fee. International transactions are charged at 4.8% per transaction with international cards settled in local currency by default.

Flutterwave POS mobile app

Flutterwave developed a designated mobile application for agents and merchants to manage their POS. The mobile app works hand-in-hand with the physical POS terminal. The app turns merchants' smartphones into a fully functional POS device. With the Flutterwave POS app, merchants and agents can manage their POS account, change their password, lock the account, and carry out all various kinds of transactions, all in one dashboard.

Flutterwave POS app

The Flutterwave mobile app is available for both Android and iOS users, and both users can download the POS app on their device's app store. Android users can download and install the app on the Google Play Store; iOS users, like iPhone and iPad users, can install the app from the Apple App Store. With the Flutterwave POS app, there's no use for the POS terminal except for the fact that the terminal will be needed for card transactions.
